NOTE: To begin, I wrote this a few years back, as you can tell, so the process may be a bit different, and I haven't gone back to try this out.
Another aspect of Route Building and using the Editor is the use of the Google Maps Overlay. We can use this tool to help place objects and to help lay track. It may not be super accurate, but with some imagination and the use of this tool we can do great things. This tool lays an image of the Google Maps app over the terrain, but we are first going to need some initial permissions to use it. What we need is a Google Maps API Key, and an account with Google. Log into your account and go code.google.com/apis/console. You will see a screen like this:
Click the button that says Create Project, and accept the terms. Then find on the list to the left APIs & auth, and under that the link to APIs. Look down the list under Browse APIs and search for Static Maps API click it. This allows us to activate the Static Maps API, click the on/off button so it shows ON. In the left menu, click the Credentials link, and then click the Create New Key button, and select the Server Key button. To create the key just click the Create button. Now copy and store the long API KEY for safe keeping in a document that you will know where and what it is. You will need to go back to it when we get into the Editor, so you might also want to write it down on paper as TS2015 isn't very friendly about copy and paste. You can then sign out of Google if you like.
